Jocelyn Heaton
Jocelyn is an associate at at Derstine Bariteau, where her practice focuses on criminal litigation at the trial level. She represents clients facing all kinds of criminal charges in and around the GTA.
Jocelyn received her JD from Osgoode Hall Law School. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), double majoring in Political Science and Economics. At law school she studied Criminal Law almost exclusively, with a focus on Criminal Defence.
Throughout her time in law school, she volunteered with Fair Change Community Services, a Toronto based student-run pro bono legal clinic that supports street-involved and homeless individuals address provincial offence tickets. She competed in the 2022 Gale Cup Criminal Law Moot for Osgoode, winning 2nd place alongside her peers on the team. Prior to, and continuing into law school Jocelyn has also been involved in various gender equity and LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations.
Jocelyn started working as a law student with Destine Bariteau in her 2021 winter semester of law school through Osgoode’s Criminal Intensive program, where she quickly grew passionate about criminal defence. Following this she returned to work with Destine Bariteau during her 2L summer in 2021, and then again for her articling from August 2022 to June 2023. After successfully completing her articles at Derstine Bariteau, Jocelyn was called to the bar in June 2023 and went on to become an associate at the firm.
Jocelyn understands that facing criminal charges can be one of the most stressful and life altering parts of a persons life. She is dedicated too helping her clients navigate the justice system with tenacity and sensitivity.
Noteworthy Results:
R. v. A.T. 2025 - Client was charged with numerous historic allegations of assault, forcible confinement and assault with a weapon against his wife following a custody dispute over their shared child. Client was acquitted of all charges.
R. v. B.L. 2024 - Client was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. Client was acquitted of both charges.
R. v. V.V. 2024 - Client was charged with break and enter and a number of firearms offences, including possession of a loaded/prohibited firearm. Client was released on bail.
R. v. A.F. 2024 - Client was charged with assaulting and threatening his wife and child. After the cross-examination of the complainant, the Crown invited an acquittal on all charges.
R. v. D.W. 2024 - Client was charged with manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm. Client was acquitted on all charges.
R. v. L.H. 2023 - Client was charged with first degree murder and attempted murder. Client was acquitted outright of first degree murder.
